Putnam, Weeks hold off Steele Subaru in Sunday Action

Merle Putnam scored twice and Ben Gibbon made 22 saves to help the Weeks Major Midgets defeat Steele Subaru 5-1 at the Wellness Center on Sunday.

After a scoreless first period, Putnam made it 1-0 Weeks at 18:50 of the first period, which was his first Major Midget goal, putting home a Jacob Melanson rebound with a shot at the top of the hashmarks.

Connor MacLeod’s shorthanded goal made it 2-0 for the Weeks at 11:27 of the 2^nd period.  MacLeod banged home a rebound in the crease after Ben Fraser got in tight on goal and was initially stopped by the Steele goalie.  Less than 10 minutes later, Putnam fired home his second of the afternoon on a beautiful 3 on 2 feed from defenseman James Harrison.

Weeks entered the 3^rd period with a 3-0 lead and momentum.  40 seconds into the period, Sam Gallant of the Subarus was handed a 5 minute major for checking from behind and with it came a Weeks powerplay.  However, this opportunity was surrendered early as the Weeks took a bench minor for too many men on the ice.  On the shortened Powerplay for Dartmouth, Captain Ben Allison found the back of the net to cut the lead to 3-1.  Dartmouth used the goal to tilt the ice until Jacob Melanson found the puck on his stick coming over the offensive blue line less than two minutes later.  Melanson drove wide on the defenseman and shot far side on the Steele goalie and watched the twine of the net bulge.

Ben Fraser ensured the victory with a breakaway snap shot over the shoulder of the Subaru net minder with 8 minutes to play in the 3^rd.
